On June 17th 1940, the vanguard of the advancing German armies took over the town: four years later, on June 6th , at around 8pm, the “Great Burning” began – “la Grande Brûlerie” - as Louis Beuve called it.
The fire burned all night, leaving 95% of the town destroyed, and over 500 of its 12000 inhabitants paid the ultimate price for the town's freedom.
When it came to rebuilding the town, there were some calls to reconstruct the town elsewhere and leave the ruins as they were – but the people of Saint-Lô would not have it and by their tenacity and determination had the shattered town rebuilt on its original and historic site.
